Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is the pledge a business makes where it promises to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of workforce and their family as well as the local community (Pride, Hughes, Kapoor 42). This practice helps to form or improve the positive image of the company. Businesses that follow the socially responsible model consider the impact of the company’s actions on society. However, certain rules of behaviour must be followed so that we can all live and get along by respecting each other. Today it has become a truism to say that the medium of photography is light. But the skill required to capture that light in ways that celebrates its beauty and mystery has been mastered as fully by Ansel Adams as by almost any other twentieth-century photographer. And it seems highly appropriate that the name of the exhibition contains the words FIAT LUX: let there be light, As a case in point we may contemplate the beautiful fragment of Bristlecone Pine Wood at the White Mountain High Altitude Station. Here the stark light-dark-light contrasts reveal Adams at his best. While the sunset's light accentuates the shapes of the wood at its edges, so that it glows with luminescence, the darker tonalities remind us that this fragment is as much dead as it is alive, and thus reminds us of our own mortality. For me this image also suggests that we pay greater attention to the cultivation and preservation of nature, its delicate balances, which, when neglected, lead to devastation, as is occurring in the rain forests of Brazil. Even in juxtaposition with death, however, this lovely Adams image speaks of the glory of life. I don't know of a more spectacular view than the one from the top of the Berkeley hills across the San Francisco Bay toward the city, and the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. The silent serenity of this photograph contrasts markedly with the devastation of recent events. As beautiful as this image is we also know that many areas of the greater area of the San Francisco Bay are polluted. In a photograph taken from the Lick Observatory the scientific facility is not visible, but we still, with the knowledge of the vantage point from which it was taken, sense the precarious balances of nature and technology, which so universally threaten the existence of both, including threats to outer space, reminding us to heed the ever-increasing warnings of pollution. The misty delicacy which characterizes this photograph of rolling hills, outlined with light, and trees, which are threatened by drought, makes us wonder how long these species will remain. Whether young or old, located in a city, or in more remote environs, whether researching the fruits of the earth or the mysteries of outer space, these never-before-exhibited images provide a wealth of visual information about the varieties and richnesses of our world.

Nick Carraway, the narrator and important character in the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is deeply characterized through what he says, thinks, and is seen as by others. Many different perspectives of Nick are evident throughout the novel. He is judged and characterized by himself, his friends, and other strangers that he meets in the novel. Fitzgerald uses more dialogue to characterize Nick than other mediums. In the beginning of the book, on the first page, Nick himself declares that he is the narrator of the book. He states that he is â€Å"inclined to reserve all judgements† (Fitzgerald 1) because he has had many advantages which the average person would not have had. This is the first bit of character that we see developed in Nick’s character. He is not quick to judge people simply because he knows that if he was, he would be trying to understand a life which has not been a part of him. It could also mean that Nick is conscious of what other people tell him, because his father told him â€Å"Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had† (Fitzgerald 1). Clearly, Nick is an observant person based on the fact that the novel is narrated in such great detail by him. â€Å"Every friday five crates of lemons and oranges arrived from a fruiterer in New York—every Monday these same oranges and lemons left his back door in a pyramid of pulpless halves† (Fitzgerald 39). Nick is super observant, as observations just as detailed as that are told on most every page in the novel. Nick is not always as forgiving and understanding as he claims in the beginning of the novel, however. There are times, although only a few, when Nick is judgemental towards others. One quote stands out as a popular, recognizable line that Nick says on page 160. â€Å"‘They’re a rotten crowd,’ I shouted across the lawn. ‘You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together’† (Fitzgerald 160). This quote is an indirect insult and criticism toward the neighbors and residents who attended a party at Gatsby’s house. He shouts this to Gatsby after talking about Gatsby’s past and how he ended up where he is now. Nick can be characterized in that quote as being either extremely appreciative of Gatsby or being extremely judgemental of the crowd at the party. Likely both, Nick is going against what he said about himself in the beginning of the novel, which also says that he sometimes makes false statements. Fitzgerald also uses physical descriptions to characterize Nick. â€Å"Dressed up in white flannels I went over to his lawn† (Fitzgerald 41). Although not much is described, only his clothes that night, we can still see character development within that description. The fact that he’s wearing simple, white flannels, although fancy and expensive, are also very neutral and humble. Even though West Egg is considered to be â€Å"New Money†, Nick is more observant and in the background. It seems as though he would rather watch something than be watched by something. He could have worn flagrant colors and flaunted himself, but he chose to do the opposite. Another somewhat physical description of Nick is that he’s not a city-born character. He was born in Minnesota, not New York, and because of this, it could be implied that he grew up in a simpler place, where it did not matter what you wore or looked like. This can be considered while characterizing Nick’s physical traits. Fitzgerald exemplifies Nick’s characteristics in multiple ways throughout the novel. The evidence Fitzgerald provides for the reader is clearly given and shows how Nick is not always what he wishes he could be from a personality standpoint. What Fitzgerald did to show the different sides of Nick’s character is a major reason he is considered among the top American novelists; and The Great Gatsby is by far his best work.

In Hedda Gabler the heroine struggles to satisfy her ambitious and independent intellect within the narrow role society allows her. Unable to be creative in the way she desires, Hedda's passions become destructive both to others and herself. In lines 1-5, the writer states: â€Å"Life the hound/Equivocal/Comes at a bound/Either to rend me/Or to befriend me.† The speaker compares the habits of a hound to life to show even though they are not alike, they are similar in the way of not knowing the next thing that can happen. They are both questionable and suspicious because no one knows what will happen next and there is a possibility of it tearing one apart. Additionally, it can be a friend to one and everything will go well. This enforces how uncertain life is towards human beings. Meanwhile, the speaker continues in lines 6-11 by saying: â€Å"I cannot tell/ The hound’s intent/ Till he has sprung/ At my bare hand/ With teeth or tongue.† There is a sense of tension that is created in these lines by the use of imagery in order to show how no one is sure of what will follow. There is a possibility that life won’t be very friendly and will come at one â€Å"with teeth or tongue.† This can seem like a negative thing because it could come and bite you or that phrase could mean it is coming with happiness and joy thus promising good things to come. Finally, the speaker says in the last two lines â€Å"Meanwhile I stand/And wait the event.† This suggests the speaker is passive and waiting for something to happen. This is because one doesn’t know what will happen thus will not actively participate. In life, one might not always participate because life is uncertain and it can either be a friend or destroy the person.

Communication Studies Internal Assessment Essay

The Communication Studies course requires us as students to complete an internal assessment. The internal assessment grade will be added to the cape communication studies examination grade to produce the final grade. Not completing the internal assessment will result in a failure grade because without the internal assessment grade the examination grade will ‘Ungraded’. Relationship to Work-related Interests The theme that I choose to study for my Internal Assessment has no relation to my work related interest. Relationship to Personal Interests The theme that I chose has significant relation to my personal interest. It is my personal opinion that the police force has caused their police related killings to rise greatly over the years. Theme and Purpose THEME The theme that I will be focusing on is Police Brutality but looking in depth on reckless shooting. PURPOSE My purpose for choosing this theme is because the number of police related has made a significant rise over the years and the police’s incident reports seem to be inaccurate and unbelievable. Treatment PREFACE The reflective piece is a story about a boy who witnessed police brutality first hand. The intended audience for the piece is my subject teacher, fellow classmates and to others to whom it may concern. Reflective Piece Another week of football practice was finally over for David. He was extremely tired and had a long journey home since he lived about forty miles for school. David was a seventeen year old boy in his last year of high school. David had to take three different vehicles to and from school every day. He left school about 5:00pm and now as he was about to board his second vehicle it was 6:30pm which means he would not reach home until minutes to nine. David did not like to travel on the road at such late hours but had no choice, to remain a member of the football team, practice was a must. While travelling on the bus David was replaying what he learned at school today in his head, both at class and on the field. Because David was a strong believer that sports plus academics was the recipe for success. About to board his final transport home he hears his name being shouted from behind. â€Å"David, David!!† When he looked back it was his Uncle Sean. David’s Uncle was an electrician; he lived seven blocks away with his wife, Stephanie, and their three children, Danielle, Kayla and Donovan. David liked Uncle Sean the best because they shared the same love for football. â€Å"How was football practice David?† Sean asked as soon as David entered the car, â€Å"It was cool, learnt a new tackling technique today†, David replied. The rest of the journey they talked about nothing but football, the English premier league, the best football players in Jamaica, the world cup champions. David completely forgot how tired he was and was completely wrapped up in his intense conversation with his Uncle. Out of nowhere behind them they heard a police’s car siren. Uncle Sean, thinking that they wanted clear passage to pass, slowed down but they were not passing the car. Uncle Sean decided to stop the car and see what the problem was. The police car stopped in front of them and two police officers exited the car. â€Å"Get out of the car, this is a search†, one of them ordered. David and his uncle exited the car and watch while the one of the officers searched the car. The other went to David and his uncle, â€Å"Lift your hands in the air and spread your legs, two a inno†, he ordered. After completing his search he walked over to the other officer. â€Å"So we find weed pon yuh, yuh no say yuh can affi pay five thousand dollar or else†, one of the officers said, holding a parcel with ganja inside of it. â€Å"That is not mine; it must be yours because I don’t know where you found that. It could not be in my car†, Sean replied. â€Å"Yow idiot bwoy, a accuse yuh a accuse mi partner!† the other officer shouted. The police officer walked right up to Sean and hit him in the face. â€Å"do wah yuh want, mi nah pay yuh no money batty bwoy†, Sean screamed. The police man pointed the gun in Sean face and said, â€Å"gaan way to far† and fired the gun, twice. David ran in some nearby bushes and escaped the police. That night David’s uncle died. Again the police force had robbed another family one of their valuable members. Robbed a business one valuable employee and robbed society a valuable member. David reached home safely and told his mother everything that happened. *JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED*
